New Trend: Divorce Parties—Could They Bring Closure?

What was once the rage for engagement parties has made a 180 degree turn to divorce parties. Divorce parties have become the latest trend. Glynda Rhodes, owner of the website Divorce Party Planner, says, "I mean there's celebrations for everything why not celebrate 'I made it through, I survived.'"

Two years ago, Rhodes, a long-time party planner, got the idea from her friend and new business partner, Mari-Rene Alu, who was going through a painful divorce at the time. That's when Rhodes threw a party for Alu-her first one.

"It was kind of a way of saying thank you to everybody who took my phone calls, listened to everything I had to talk about, hated him with me," said Mari-Rene Alu.

Rhodes has gone on to plan many more divorce parties. Her fee ranges from $1,000 on up to $5,000. She says it takes months to plan a party because she likes to customize it and to do that, she needs to know her client personally.

"If they want to burn their dress, or if they want to go to a spa-everyone has a different way they want to release," said Rhodes. Her latest client, Wendy Lewis, had to short sell her home to pay for legal fees as a result of going through a lengthy divorce battle. "It's so stressful that by the time it's all over, all you want to do is have a release," Lewis said.

Some licensed relationship therapists actually recommend the parties as a way to release that might bring closure. Donna Wilburn, a marriage and family therapist based in Las Vegas said, "So they can heal and detach from all the grieving and stress they've been through."

However, while clients are encouraged to let loose, they should celebrate responsibly. "We try to encourage no crazy, no regrets," said Rhodes.

Lewis says that after months of courts, lawyers and fights, the best part of Rhodes' services is to be able to sit back and just have fun. She says it's worth a few thousand (dollars).
