KIRK C. STANGE: Properties divided in Missouri by the court first determining what's marital property and what's separate property. Property that's exclusively yours would be property that, one, you owned before marriage; two, you've inherited; or three, was a gift to you. The court then sets aside each party their separate property and then divides marital property in a way that's just.

If you're considering divorce, one of the first things you need to do to protect your marital property is to, one, hire an attorney that's going to properly advise you about different types of property and how you protect it. We definitely encourage parties to work together to reduce costs. If two parties can settle their divorce, that's a good thing.
