Men, beware of these unhealthy divorce issues

Men, beware of these unhealthy divorce issues

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Divorce/Separation on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

Much of the attention surrounding divorce focuses on women and mothers. However, men and fathers face just as many unhealthy issues as women do, and some of them can affect their health and overall wellbeing. While it is important for all parties in a divorce to care for themselves, men often ignore the problems associated with divorce.

Both men and women suffer when divorce/separation becomes imminent. Some of the issues they face are similar (e.g. concerns over children), but some are largely unique to men. Below, you will find three of the biggest problems men face during and after divorce.

Health problems: According to research, men gain more health benefits than women do when they are married. When men divorce, their health tends to decline. They may put on too much weight, feel depressed or experience substance abuse problems.

Feelings of failure: Like women, men experience feelings of loss when divorce/separation occurs. However, men may also feel like they have failed at life when a marriage ends. What makes this situation even worse for men is that they typically do not seek emotional support during times of adversity.

Loss of parental identity: Reduced contact with their children is just as devastating for dads as it is for moms. For noncustodial fathers, this reduced contact can be particularly difficult as dads try to balance their new parental role in the lives of their kids.

As family law attorneys, we can help men in Saint Louis County with the legal aspects of getting a divorce or separation. To manage the negative byproducts of divorce, we also encourage all parties to build a strong support system. Caring for yourself helps you become a better parent for your kids, and we believe that is a goal all parents share.
