Missouri’s former governor prepares for divorce

Is it time to consider the end of your marriage? Someone may ask this many times before taking steps to make it happen, because it is a difficult decision that often comes after years of people growing apart. The presence of minor children may also affect their choice, as parents always want the best for their children.

The former governor of Missouri and his wife have decided to call it quits after nine years of marriage and two sons. The politician resigned after a scandal involving an extramarital affair and compromising photos. He had also faced political problems after allegedly providing inappropriate information to his campaign funding staff.

Their announced included the phrase “amicable decision.” What does that mean? The textbook definition of the word may not be that helpful in the law, as it simply means people are being friendly and not openly hostile towards each other. An amicable divorce in some jurisdictions implies that no alimony was requested by either spouse.

A truly amicable divorce, both emotionally and physically, is often best achieved through real cooperation between spouses as they end their marriage. Collaborative law, a relatively new approach to divorce, may help accomplish this goal for people and their children.

If people need help working out how to separate assets or child custody, an attorney can help work out how to approach these issues. A lawyer can represent a person’s interests whether or not they are up against demands from a spouse. Legal representation may also help figure out if a collaborative agreement with your spouse is even possible.
