The woman had previously spent three days in jail for failing to make child support payments on time, and she risks another six months if she fails to pay in the future. Nearly 3,000 people were charged with late payments or failure to pay child support in Missouri in 2019, which can cause a vicious cycle making it harder for parents to stay on top of their obligations.
The Show Me State has also suspended thousands of drivers’ licenses after holders fell into arrears. The government in Jefferson City is being sued over this practice, as it is believed to increase the difficult of people to work, and therefore, earn the money they and their children need.
