Everyone needs an escape now and then. Anyone with a child, though, knows that trying to relax is a challenge when there is a little one in need of constant supervision. This is doubly true when you are going solo with your child.
A vacation in the weeks after finalizing a divorce may be the perfect way to blow off some steam and really connect with your child in a one on one setting. It is going to take some extra planning though. These are a few of the best ways a single parent can make a trip easier on themselves and more enjoyable for their child.
Go somewhere with other kids
Depending on how old they are, your kids are likely going to get bored pretty quickly if you’re their only companionship. Do some research and figure out how popular your vacation destination is with families. Your child will no doubt create their best memories playing with other kids their age. Plus, them playing together means some extra relaxation time for you.
Get your children involved with the planning
This is a great opportunity to strengthen your bond with your child; why not ask them what they want to do on the trip? Obviously a nine-year-old can’t set your budget, but simple choices between going to a pool or an amusement park, or getting pizza or pasta are simple ways to get children of any age involved.
Don‘t over plan
A good rule for any vacation, but especially for one where you have extra responsibility: don’t try to plan every hour of the day. It’s good to have a loose itinerary but leave plenty of room for flexibility. One or two major activities per day is probably enough. Maybe even consider one day with no plan whatsoever.
Time spent away from the pressure of real life is healthy for any relationship, especially when there have been months of strain. With these tips, you and your child will no doubt create new memories to last a lifetime.
