Helpful Tips for a Happy Mother’s Day for Divorced Moms

Mothers play a critical role in the upbringing of their children-from the time the baby is born to the time they learn how to drive and leave home. Although having two parents is ideal, a mother sometimes finds herself playing both the role of the mother and father. Despite this, single mothers are capable of raising loving, respectable and confident children.

As a single mother, you may be feeling overwhelmed, having to plan your own Mother’s Day. With half of all marriages ending in divorce each year, you are not alone with the task of making this special day memorable. Here are some tips:

1. A Mother’s Day celebration is in line. Make the day special-even if you have to plan it yourself. After all, you deserve it. You wear many hats all year long-mom, nurse, chef, taxi driver, party planner, coach, and yes, maid. So this is your day to relax and just be Mom. It only comes once a year.

2. Teach your children at a young age the meaning of Mother’s Day. Discuss what it means to you and what you did for your mom when you were younger– like the plant you gave to your mom or the hand-made cards you make every year. It is an important part of their heritage, so go to the local library and read an age-appropriate book to them about Mother’s Day. Make it a tradition that they can pass down to their children.

3. Let your children know what you expect on Mother’s Day, whether it’s a big hug and kiss or a great big “I love you!” You may get what you ask for and more. You may get a card or a hand-painted piece of artwork that will last for years to come. Younger children love crafts so make sure you have some supplies handy. Older children will want to buy a gift, so enlist the help of family and friends to help them.

4. Plan a get together with other single moms. Invite them over with their children and have a potluck dinner. Make certain to also invite the mothers and their adult children who live out of town. No one should spend Mother’s Day alone. You can keep the costs down by having everyone bring something. Plan some outdoor games with the children and have them help decorate. Make sure you set the expectation that the children will help and be responsible for the clean-up after the party. This is one day you are not the maid.

5. Take time to reflect on the happy times and your feelings about being a mother. Single motherhood comes with many challenges, but you can face these challenges head-on each day. It’s okay to be proud of what you have accomplished with your children because you deserve it.

Mother’s Day shouldn’t be the only day of the year we celebrate mothers. Around the world, mothers are playing a significant role by protecting and nurturing our children’s future and doing it with only one set of hands. This, in itself deserves to be recognized. Happy Mother’s Day!
